American Indian/Alaskan Native SDSU Scholarships

Ben Reifel Memorial Scholarship

To be considered for this scholarship, the applicant must:

  • Be American Indian;
  • Be an enrolled member of one of the nine tribes in South Dakota (Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, Crow Creek Sioux Tribe, Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe, Lower Brule Sioux Tribe, Oglala Sioux Tribe, Rosebud Sioux Tribe, Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate, Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and Yankton Sioux Tribe), or have proof of enrollment by either a parent or grandparent;
  • Be a junior or senior standing undergraduate student;
  • Be a graduate of a South Dakota high school;
  • Be in good academic standing, and shall be required to have achieved/and maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 during the preceding two semesters of attendance at South Dakota State University.
  • The scholarship may be renewed, if the recipient continues to meet the criteria.

 

Crazy Horse Memorial Scholarship

To be considered for this scholarship, the applicant must:

  • Must be American Indian student who demonstrates excellent potential and financial need;
  • Preference given to South Dakota residents;
  • Open to students at any class level;
  • The scholarship is renewable
  • Award amount for each student will vary depending on the number of students eligible.

 

Daktronics, Inc. Native American Scholarship (Awarded through the College of Engineering)

To be considered for this scholarship, the applicant must

  • Be an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe or Alaska Native
  • Be in good academic standing with the College of Engineering, and shall be required to have achieved/and maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5;
  • Be an Undergraduate student seeking a career and a degree in the fields of: electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or electronics engineering technology.
  • Demonstrate good student standing at South Dakota State University and the College of Engineering, and shall be required to remain a student of good standing;

 

Delano No Neck Scholarship

To be considered for this scholarship, the applicant must:

  • Be an enrolled member of the Oglala Lakota Nation;
  • Be a graduate of a high school located on the Pine Ridge Reservation (Bennett County High School, Crazy Horse High School, Little Wound High School, Red Cloud High School or Pine Ridge High School);
  • Be in good academic standing, and shall be required to have achieved/and maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0;
  • Be seeking either an Undergraduate or Graduate degree in the Biological Sciences;
  • Demonstrate good community standing at South Dakota State University, and shall be required to remain a student of good standing;

 

Dr. Sherwood & Elizabeth Berg Scholarship for Native American Students

To be considered for this scholarship, the applicant must:

  • Be American Indian or Alaska Native;
  • Be in good academic standing, and shall be required to have achieved/and maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0;
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities, as identified with Native American culture;
  • Demonstrate commitment to community service and academic potential;
  • The scholarship may be renewed, if the recipient continues to meet the criteria.

 

Eugene W. Houda and Mary Milner Houda Scholarship

To be considered for this scholarship, the applicant must:

  • Be an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe or Alaska Native;
  • Be an Undergraduate or Graduate student seeking a degree in one of the following fields of study: agricultural science, engineering, pharmacy, nursing, education, or business.

 

Gladys and Phillips Pitts Native American/African American Scholarship

To be considered for this scholarship, the applicant must:

  • Be Native American,  Alaska Native, or African American 

 

Helen Roberti Native American Scholarship

To be considered for this scholarship, the applicant must:

  • Be an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe or Alaska Native;
  • Be an Undergraduate or Graduate student;
  • Demonstrate a commitment to applying education and experience toward the betterment of tribal communities, specifically in the areas of law, medicine, and other advanced degrees.

 

The Henrietta Nichols Fund

To be considered for this scholarship, the applicant must:

  • Be an enrolled member of the Yankton Sioux Tribe.

 

Jack and Mary Marken Native American Scholarship

To be considered for this scholarship, the applicant must:

  • Be an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe and is at least one-fourth blood quantum or Alaska Native;
  • Be an Undergraduate student;
  • Be in good academic standing, and shall be required to have achieved/and maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0;
  • The scholarship may be renewed, if the recipient continues to meet the criteria.

 

Kasey and Karla Abbott Endowed Native American Scholarship

To be considered for this scholarship, the applicant must:

  • Be an enrolled member of one of the nine tribes in South Dakota (Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, Crow Creek Sioux Tribe, Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe, Lower Brule Sioux Tribe, Oglala Sioux Tribe, Rosebud Sioux Tribe, Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate, Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and Yankton Sioux Tribe);
  • Be a junior or senior standing undergraduate student;
  • Be seeking a career and a degree in a hard science field, such as: pharmacy, nursing, engineering, animal sciences, and chemistry, and shall be required to have achieved/and maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5;
  • The scholarship may be renewed, if the recipient continues to meet the criteria.

 

Lindell Scholarship

To be considered for this scholarship, the applicant must:

  • Be an enrolled member of one of the nine tribes in South Dakota (Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, Crow Creek Sioux Tribe, Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe, Lower Brule Sioux Tribe, Oglala Sioux Tribe, Rosebud Sioux Tribe, Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate, Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and Yankton Sioux Tribe);
  • Be an Undergraduate or Graduate student;
  • Demonstrate a financial need.

 

Man Afraid of His Horses Native American Scholarship

To be considered for this scholarship, the applicant must:

  • Be an American Indian or Alaska Native;
  • Be seeking a degree in the College of Agriculture, Food & Environmental Sciences;
  • Demonstrate academic potential and financial need.

 

Stephenson Scholarship

To be considered for this scholarship, the applicant must:

  • Be an American Indian or Alaska Native;
  • Be an Undergraduate student;
  • Demonstrate the successful completion of one (1) year of college.

 

Unci Scholarship for Undergraduate Nursing: One scholarship at $2,500

Selection of the recipient is based on the following criteria:

  • The recipient shall be an undergraduate nursing student admitted to the nursing program
  • The recipient may study on either the Brookings main campus or the Rapid City campus.
  • The recipient shall be an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe in South Dakota with preference given to students who are enrolled members of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe
  • The recipient is encouraged to submit a biographical note sharing their career goals and aspirations with the donor. 
  • In the event there are no qualified recipients, available funds shall be saved for the next academic year. 
  • The recipient of the Unci Scholarship for Undergraduate Nursing shall be selected by the American Indian Scholarship Committee.

 

Unci Scholarship for Graduate Nursing: One scholarship at $2,500

Selection of the recipient is based on the following criteria:

  • The recipient shall be a graduate nursing student. 
  • The recipient may study on either the  Brookings main campus or the Rapid City campus.
  • The recipient shall be an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe in South Dakota with preference given to students who are enrolled members of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe.
  • The recipient is encouraged to submit a biographical note sharing their career goals and aspirations with the donor.

William G. France Native American Scholarship

To be considered for this scholarship, the applicant must:

  • Be an enrolled member of one of the nine tribes in South Dakota (Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, Crow Creek Sioux Tribe, Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe, Lower Brule Sioux Tribe, Oglala Sioux Tribe, Rosebud Sioux Tribe, Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate, Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and Yankton Sioux Tribe);
  • Be an Undergraduate student;
  • Be in good academic standing, and shall be required to have achieved/and maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0;
  • The scholarship may be renewed, if the recipient continues to meet the criteria.

 

Wokini Undergraduate Scholarship

To be considered for this scholarship, the applicant must:

  • Be a student admitted to SDState as a first time student for fall semester. 
  • Submit a Freshman Scholarship Application to the Office of Admissions 
  • Must provide documentation of being Tribally enrolled in one of the nine Tribal Nations here in South Dakota
  • Must be a resident of South Dakota.

 

Wokini Undergraduate Tribal College Transfer Scholarship

To be considered for this scholarship, the applicant must:

  • Be a graduate of a SD Tribal College with an Associate's degree admitted to SDState.
  • Submit a Transfer Scholarship application to the Office of Admissions.
  • Must provide documentation of being Tribally enrolled in one of the nine Tribal Nations here in South Dakota.
  • Must be a resident of South Dakota.

 

Wokini Tribal College Graduate Transfer Scholarship

To be considered for this scholarship, the applicant must:

  • Be a graduate of a SD Tribal College with a Bachelor's degree admitted to the SDState Graduate School.
  • Submit a Transfer Scholarship application to the Office of Admissions.
  • Must provide documentation of being Tribally enrolled in one of the nine Tribal Nations here in South Dakota. 
  • Must be a resident of South Dakota.
