Students are encouraged to budget for time to submit scholarship material. The process of filling out your application, writing a personal statement, searching for the ideal person to write your letter of recommendation and submitting any additional information, requires careful management and creative energy, so begin these tasks early.
Letter of Recommendation
A letter of recommendation is another opportunity for the AISC scholarship committee to become aware of the qualities that make you distinctive intellectually, personally and/or professionally. Listed below are some protocols that applicants may want to consider throughout the process. This information has been adapted from the University of Washington's Center for Experiential Learning and Diversity and The Career Center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Choose Well. The most appropriate individuals to ask are those who are familiar with your academic and/or professional experience. A good question you may want to ask is, "Do you feel like you know me and my work well enough to write me a good letter of recommendation?"
Start Early. Remember to make this request in as far in advance as possible (a 3 to 4 week notice is ideal). Exercising this courtesy allows the letter writer to author a polished recommendation that enthusiastically supports your application.
Make Information Available. Applicants are advised to provide recommenders with the following information, as this may assist them with how to adjust their comments:
- Name and focus of scholarship(s) you are applying for
- Who to address the letter to (in this case, the AISC Scholarship Committee)
- Date by which you need the recommendation
- Draft of personal statement
- Include instructions for what to do with the letter, once it is complete
Be Gracious. A thank you note is a great way to acknowledge the time and effort the letter writer dedicated to your request. This gesture also sets the tone for you to seek another letter of recommendation from this person in the future.
- If possible, letter should be typed on letterhead
- Letter of recommendation should be signed
- Place letter in sealed envelope
- Include letter in scholarship application packet
Thank you Note
A mandatory condition of accepting a donor-funded scholarship is composing a thank you note addressed to the scholarship donor. By writing a thank you note, you demonstrate that you are the kind of student that they can be proud to support. Hearing from scholarship recipients is also very meaningful to donors. It allows them to obtain a glimpse of how the gift has made a difference in the life of a student. Many of them continue to give additional scholarship funds, because they know their gifts are deeply appreciated and that they are helping deserving students reach their potential. A thank you note not only provides an opportunity to apprise donors of how their generosity has made a difference in their educational pathway. The AISC has SDSU thank you cards available for scholarship recipients to use.
Please note that your scholarship will not be released to your student account until your thank you note has been submitted.

Thank you Note Requirements:
- Your note may be typed or handwritten. If you choose to hand write it, be sure to write legibly.
- If you receive multiple donor-funded scholarships, you must submit an individual thank you note for each award you received.
- If you are receiving a renewable scholarship, you must write a thank you note to the donor each year that you receive the scholarship.
- You must submit your thank you note(s) by the date indicated on your Scholarship Notification Letter.
Your words remind donors of the impact of their scholarship gift, so thank the donor for their generosity in providing this scholarship.
Tell the donor about yourself. Where are you from? What are you majoring in and why? What are your goals after completing your education at SDSU? How will this scholarship help you reach your future plans?
Write clearly and concisely.
Thank you notes should be legibly composed on good quality paper. It may help to, first, write a rough draft.
Double-check for Grammatical Errors.
Pay careful attention to the spelling and organization of your note, for a well-written note reflects favorably on you, the scholarship committee who selected you and on SDSU as a whole.
