Release of ‘Warrior’ Oats

The South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station is releasing a new white oat variety named Warrior to Certified Seed growers in the spring of 2019. It has a pedigree of SD041405/SD060130 and was tested as SD120419. Warrior is medium in both maturity (one day later than Horsepower) and height with excellent straw strength. (two inches taller than Horsepower). It is resistant to crown rust, moderately resistant to smut and moderately susceptible to barley yellow dwarf virus. Groat percent and percent plump, mid and thin kernels are similar to Shelby427. Warrior has high yield potential and is similar to Horsepower and Saddle in test weight. There will be a $0.30/bushel research fee on the sales of Certified Warrior Oats and Plant Variety Protection will be applied for. There will be no saleable Registered Seed class.
