GENERAL GUIDELINES

The virology section at the ADRDL routinely performs isolation and identification of viral pathogens affecting livestock species (cattle and swine), companion animals (horses, cats and dogs) and fish. The diagnostic virology tests that are offered at the ADRDL include virus isolation in cell culture and fluorescent antibody testing in frozen tissues. Direct fluorescent antibody testing for rabies is also performed at the virology section in tissues from livestock and wild animal species. In addition to routine diagnostic testing, the virology section also offers the services of virus isolation, -amplification, and -quantification and fluorescent antibody testing for researchers that need virologic assessments in their experimental samples.

Next generation sequencing services are also offered by the virology section. These tests include viral whole genome sequencing and metagenomic sequencing.

To ensure the quality and accuracy of testing, it is strictly important that specimens for virologic evaluations are kept cold after collection and during shipment. Freezing is not necessary unless a long delay before reaching the laboratory is anticipated.
