How To Setup a Secondary Email Address

What is my secondary email address?

In most cases, your secondary email is the email address you included on your application to South Dakota State University. It could also be the email you received your acceptance letter or any other correspondence from the University.

How can I update my secondary email address?

Log in to MyState, click Dashboard, and go to "My Current Profile." Once there, under your email, it should have the option to "change secondary email." This will take you to Self Service, where it shows your personal information. On the second screen, there should be a box that says 'personal details' at the top, the next one down says 'email,' and you can update your secondary email address there.

If the steps above didn't work for you, you could fill out the Change of Address form through the Records and Registration office to update your secondary email address.

Name Changes

If a student needs to change their name, they will first need to initiate a request through the RECORDS & REGISTRATION OFFICE, which only takes about two days to go through.

Once the Records Office changes their side, they send the information to our networking team.

If, however, over a month has passed since the name change was initiated with the Records Office, contact the Support Desk, and we can put a request to networking to see if they're able to change the account name. Networking will need the old name and new name to process the request.

Account Lockouts

Three incorrect login attempts anywhere the user enters their username and password will lock a user out of their SDSU Account. This can occur after a user resets their password. It may update on their computer but not their phone. The phone will continually lock it out because the password has not been updated. The lockouts can occur on any device (Phone, tablet, desktop, laptop).

If you are having account lockout issues, you can make sure an old password isn't saved on a device. Make sure that when you are getting locked out that you are not changing your password every time. This can cause even more issues. Here are a few things to check if you are getting locked out of your account frequently.

Check Credential Manager

  • Search Credential Manager on your computer.
  • Remove anything related to your SDSU account from the Web and Windows Sections.

Email Profile

  • Close your Outlook program and reopen it, it should prompt you to update your password, especially if you removed the saved password from Credential Manager in step one.

Wireless Profile

  • Click on the wireless icon in the bottom right of your screen
  • Click on 'Open Network & Internet Settings'
  • Select WiFi, and 'Manage Known Networks'
  • Go though all the Networks you have connected to and 'Forget' any SDSU networks (i.e. SDSUStudent, SDSUFacStaff, SDSUGuest, eduroam, SDSUIoT)
  • Connect back to your preferred network
    • SDSUStudent and SDSUFacStaff are the two you should be connecting to
    • SDSUGuest is for guest only
    • eduroam you can connect to, so if you visit any other campus with eduroam, you can connect to their network too
    • SDSUIoT if for gaming and streaming devices only

Check your Keychain

  • Search Keychain
  • Thoroughly search through all the categories for any SDSU related accounts, and delete them.
  • Make sure that none have gone to the Trash Bin, if they have, remove them from there as well.

Email profile

  • Start Outlook
  • If prompted, enter your new password
  • Alternatively, click Outlook in the Dock, click Preferences, and update your password in Preferences.

Wireless Profile

  • Click on the WiFi icon in the top right and Open Network Preferences

  • Connect back to your preferred network
    • SDSUStudent and SDSUFacStaff are the two you should be connecting to
    • SDSUGuest is for guest only
    • eduroam you can connect to, so if you visit any other campus with eduroam, you can connect to their network too
    • SDSUIoT if for gaming and streaming devices only

Wireless Profiles

  • Got into the WiFi settings on your phone
  • Go though all the Networks you have connected to and 'Forget' any SDSU networks (i.e. SDSUStudent, SDSUFacStaff, SDSUGuest, eduroam, SDSUIoT)
  • Connect back to your preferred network
    • You should be connecting to either SDSUStudent or SDSUFacStaff, depending on your status at SDSU
    • SDSUGuest is for guest only
    • eduroam you can connect to, so if you visit any other campus with eduroam, you can connect to their network too
    • SDSUIoT if for gaming and streaming devices only
Outlook Profile
  • Open the Outlook app on your phone
  • You should be prompted to 'Sign In' on the bottom of the app
  • If you are not prompted, sign out of the app and back in and you should be prompted for your new password

Some account lockouts happen because they have a VPN client persistently connected on your home system. Make sure to disconnect your VPN at home.

If you have gone through every device and are still experiencing lockout issues, please contact the Support Desk and they can make a ticket to the networking team from them to dig a little deeper into where the lockouts are happening.

Compromised Accounts

Do you think you may have a compromised account? If so, check out our Email Phishing Scams page to see what you can do to resolve the issue, and prevent it from happening again in the future.

Disabled Accounts

After a student graduates from or leaves SDSU, they will no longer have access to D2L, MyState, Box, or Office365 programs. Only current students have access to these services. They will still have access to their Jacks email, as long as they sign into it every six months.
