Mentoring

One form of relationship-building is mentoring, and assigning a senior faculty member to act as a mentor to a new junior faculty is as important as (if not more so) providing the new faculty member with a substantial start-up package.  It is often said that the most significant decision a department head makes is in the hiring and development of new tenure-track assistant professors.  Well-organized and significant investment of time by a senior faculty member in a junior faculty member will pay dividends for the head and the department.
