Scholarships for Sociology Majors

Although there may be several scholarships for which you may qualify, there are five that we wish to highlight.  If you have a question about any of these scholarships, please contact Don Arwood, the Chair of the Sociology Department Scholarship Committee. 

DOUGLAS M. CHITTICK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP.  This scholarship was established in the Fall of 1990 as a tribute to Professor Douglas Chittick, a member of the Department of Rural Sociology for 41 years.  This scholarship is given to a sophomore student who has demonstrated academic excellence and leadership while at the same time being self supporting through demonstrated employment.

The criteria for eligibility are:

  • currently enrolled at SDSU with a declared major in Sociology
  • completed between 41 and 55 credit hours by the end of Fall 2010 semester
  • has an overall GPA of 2.75 or higher
  • is self-supporting (have paid employment)
  • applicant displays leadership qualities, participates in extra-curricular and/or outside activities, and have a reputation of unquestionable character

FOLEY FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP.  For this one, you must qualify for the Jackrabbit Guarantee. First preference will go to a Sociology Major. Second preference shall go to a student in the College of Arts and Sciences. Third preference shall go to a student from Bon Homme County.  Patrick Foley, 1996 Alum, and his family made this available in order to give back to the university that also gave to them. 

TED J. LARSON MEMORIAL AWARD.  This award was established in 1965 by the family of Ted Larson, an alumnus of the Sociology Department of SDSU and a graduate assistant in Sociology at the time of his death.  Ted had compiled a most impressive record of academic achievement during his years at SDSU.  This award is given annually to the outstanding graduating senior in Sociology on the basis of academic achievement as reflected in highest overall grade point average. 

MARVIN P. RILEY SCHOLARSHIP AWARD.  This award was established in memory of Dr. Marvin P. Riley, a professor of Sociology at SDSU for 34 years.  This award is given annually to the outstanding second semester junior in Sociology at SDSU on the basis of academic achievement and recommendations from faculty, both in and outside of the Sociology Department.

Applicants should meet the following criteria: 

  • enrolled at SDSU with a declared major in Sociology
  • completed between 51-66 credit hours of course work by the end of the Fall 2010 semester
  • enrolled in 15 or more credit hours during the Spring 2011 semester
  • will have completed 10 or more credit hours in Sociology, Anthropology, or Criminal Justice by the end of the Spring 2011 semester
  • have a Sociology GPA of 3.50 or higher and an overall GPA of 3.00 or higher
  • display qualities consistent with academic excellence as judged by SDSU and Rural Sociology faculty members

HOWARD M. SAUER FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP.  This scholarship was made available through the generosity of the Howard Sauer Family.  Professor Sauer served as a faculty member and department head from 1938 until his retirement in 1973.  This scholarship is awarded to a Sociology major who has maintained a GPA of 3.0 or better, has demonstrated participation in extra-curricular activities, and who has been judged by the faculty to show promise to the profession.

Applicants should meet the following criteria: 

  • enrolled at SDSU with a declared major in Sociology
  • completed 66 and 81 credit hours by the end of the Fall 2010 semester
  • expect to have completed 20 hours in Sociology by the end of the Spring 2011 semester
  • have a Sociology GPA of 3.00 or higher and an overall cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher.
