Student Organizations and Clubs

Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) is the international honor society of sociology. A, K and D are the first letters of Athropon Katamannthanein Diakonesin, which means "to investigate humanity for the purpose of service". Members of AKD promote excellence in the study of sociology, research of social problems and intellectual activities that lead to improvement in human conditions.

The Criminal Justice Club is an interest-based club that explores criminal justice-related research, internships and careers. Members organize field trips to local criminal justice-related agencies or facilities, host guest speakers, learn about job opportunities and network with local professionals.

The Human Services Club provides students with an arena conducive to the discussion of sociological ideas. Members network, learn about graduate schools, professional conferences, job opportunities and mentoring opportunities with colleagues and professors.

Psi Chi is the International Honor Society in Psychology, founded in 1929 for the purposes of encouraging, stimulating and maintaining excellence in scholarship, and advancing the science of psychology. Psi Chi serves two major goals.

• The Society's obligation to provide academic recognition to its inductees by the mere fact of membership.
• The obligation of each of the Society's local chapters to nurture the spark of that accomplishment by offering a climate congenial to members' creative development.

The Membership requirements are:

• Must be at least a second-semester sophomore;
• Must be enrolled as a major or minor in a psychology program or a program psychological in nature that is equivalent to a psychology major;
• Must have completed at least 9 semester hours or 14 quarter hours of psychology courses;
• Must have an overall GPA that is in the top 35% of their class based on rankings within sophomore, within junior and within senior classes (if the cut-off for the top 35% is below 3.00, the applicant must have an overall GPA of at least 3.00 on a 4-point scale); and
• Must have a psychology GPA that is at least 3.00 on a 4-point scale.

The SDSU Psi Chi chapter meets at least twice a month in a joint meeting with the Psychology Club. Because there are no membership requirements for the Psychology Club, freshman and sophomores are encouraged to become active in the psychology club before they are eligible to apply for Psi Chi. Psi Chi and the Psychology Club are actively involved in service projects, fundraising and social events. Many of the Psi Chi members attend an international research conference each spring to network with other chapters, present their undergraduate research and meet faculty for potential graduate programs. 

The Psychology Club is open to all SDSU students and meets bi-weekly throughout the academic year. It allows students to socialize with one another while sharing their interests in psychology. The Psychology Club provides the opportunity for students to participate in community service and volunteer projects. Students also engage in professional development as they learn about internship options, student research opportunities and the graduate school preparation process. Club officers have an excellent opportunity to gain leadership experience.

The Sociology Club is an interest-based club that stresses leadership and career-oriented development. We entrust members with the responsibility of helping gather and disseminate scientific, personal, specific or general information about social science and its practices. We enjoy the casual conversations and volunteer activities that help shape the club and strengthen our bond with the community and each other.
