New Student Checklist

We want to get you started off on the right foot before you ever set foot here. That said, keeping track of dates and deadlines isn’t something we want you to worry about—we’ll take care of that for you.

  • Apply for admission.
    • We accept applications year-round, on a rolling basis. But we don’t recommend lounging around watching YouTube—until after you’ve applied, that is. We do recommend that you apply early, at least 8 to 10 months ahead of time.
    • That way you’ll have plenty of time to line up housing, apply for scholarships and financial aid, and register for New Student Orientation.
  • Sign up for housing and pay the confirmation fee.
    • Admitted students can access the housing application through MyState.
  • Complete your academic scholarship application.
    • December 15 is our priority date.
  • Complete your FAFSA.
    • March 15 is our priority date.
  • Register for New Student Orientation.
    • NSO takes place in the summer, but students can start to register for a session as early as April.
    • Watch your mailbox in the spring for more information.
  • Receive financial aid and scholarship award information
    • We begin mailing out awards in April and continue throughout the summer, depending on when you submitted your application.
  • Check out your new SDSU Web Accounts
    • At New Student Orientation, you’ll receive information about Self Service, Jacks email, and MyState. Each online account serves a unique and important purpose for our students. We suggest familiarizing yourself with the resources before school start.
  • Submit immunizations requirement information.
    • SDSU requires proof of two MMR immunizations from all students attending classes on campus.
  • Submit all final, official transcripts
    • This includes high school and post-secondary transcripts. Make sure all of your final grades are posted and have transcripts sent directly from each school to SDSU.
  • Throughout the summer, keep an eye on your mailbox for:
    • Housing and roommate assignment (May-June),
    • Move-in dates and information (July-August) and
    • Registration confirmation (August).
  • View and pay your bill through Self Service (SDePay).
    • Finalized bills will be ready in early August. You’ll receive an e-mail notification when they’re available.
  • Purchase your books and supplies in late summer
  • Get packed and head to campus.
    • Move-in weekend takes place in late August or early September. When you arrive on campus, look for the Meet State Move-in Crew—you can’t miss us! We’ll be there to welcome you to campus, answer your questions, and yes, carry your boxes.
