Loan Counseling

Students who borrow federal student loans are required to complete both Entrance Loan Counseling and Exit Loan Counseling

Entrance Loan Counseling ensures that students understand their rights and responsibilities before receiving a federal student loan. All first-time federal student loan borrowers must complete entrance counseling before their loan funds can be disbursed. SDSU students should complete entrance counseling online at StudentAid.gov.

Exit Loan Counseling provides student loan borrowers with important information on loan repayment and managing student loan debt. Before graduating or dropping below half-time enrollment status, students with federal student loans must complete exit counseling.

Exit counseling sessions are offered for Stafford/Direct Loans (subsidized and unsubsidized), Perkins Loans and Graduate PLUS Loans. Students will need to complete the exit counseling that covers each type of loan borrowed.

SDSU students may complete Stafford/Direct Loan exit counseling at StudentAid.gov. Students with federal Perkins, Nursing or Pharmacy Loans will be contacted by the SDSU Loan Collection Department with information on how to complete exit counseling for those loans.

Additional Information

Federal student loan borrowers should be aware of the following:

  • Students withdrawing from SDSU are required to contact the Registrar's Office to initiate the withdrawal procedure.

  • Students who have a dispute or problem involving a federal student loan, may contact the U.S. Department of Educations Office of the Ombudsman for assistance in resolving the issue.

  • Students can access loan information on the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS). Students log in to NSLDS using the same federal PIN used to complete the FAFSA and Master Promissory Note.

  • Questions regarding entrance and exit counseling should be directed to the SDSU Financial Aid Office.
