South Dakota 4-H Youth Compete in National 4-H Shooting Sport
South Dakota 4-H teams competed at the Twelfth Annual National 4-H Shooting Sports Invitational held in San Antonio, Texas June 21 to 24. Twenty-three 4-H members from across the state competed in several discipline areas including; smallbore pistol and rifle, compound and recurve archery, air rifle and pistol, and shotgun.
The compound archery team received the silver medal placing second overall. Team members are Patrick Lehman, Belvidere, S.D; Zach Milligan, Harrison, S.D.; and Luke Norris and Teal Schmidt of Sturgis, S.D.. The team was coached by Gary Finn, Sturgis. The group placed fifth in Field, and received bronze medals in both FITA and 3-D.
Krista Gylling, Brookings, S.D., placed tenth overall in recurve archery. She won the bronze medal in the Field portion of the competition June 22.
Raymond Freeman, Britton, S.D., placed tenth overall in air rifle and placed tenth in the standing competition June 21.
Zach Milligan, Harrison, S.D., placed fifth overall in compound archery. He placed sixth in the Field competition June 22, and won the bronze medal for third place in the 3-D event June 23.
Additional individual event winners include; Tanner Jacobs, Hartford, , S.D., placing fourth in the air pistol bullseye competition; Teal Schmidt, Sturgis, S.D., with a ninth place in compound archery FITA, Trae Bakley of Martin, S.D., with a seventh place in smallbore rifle silhouettes, and Martin Prouty, Bryant, S.D., with a seventh place finish in the smallbore pistol rapid fire competition.
Almost 3,000 South Dakota 4-H youth participate in the shooting sports program. Over the past 30 years, the program has taught thousands of young people to shoot - emphasizing safety, youth development and skill development.
