The South Dakota State University Student Subunit (SDSUAFS) was founded in 2003 under the auspices of the Dakota Chapter and the Parent Society of the American Fisheries Society (AFS) and was recognized by South Dakota State University as an official campus organization in 2005. Members of SDSUAFS include graduate and undergraduate students at the university. The goals of the subunit:
SDSUAFS provides a means for aspiring fisheries professionals to become members of a professional society and to further develop their professional skills outside of the classroom. The Subunit encourages students of all levels—freshman to graduate student—to get involved. Dues are $5 for undergraduate students, $10 for faculty and graduate students.
