SDSU/Brookings Optimist Jazz Festival
Jazz Ensembles of all levels are cordially invited to participate in the Eleventh Annual SDSU/Brookings Optimist Jazz Festival! This year, the vocal and instrumental festivals will be on different days and venues.
The Vocal Jazz Festival will be held on Monday, April 4th, 2016 at McCrory Gardens. The headliner for the evening concert at 7:30pm at the Performing Arts Center will be The Real Group, one of the Woodbine Productions featured groups for the year.
The Instrumental Jazz Festival will be held on Thursday, April 7th, 2016 at the Performing Arts Center. The featured artists for the evening concert with SDSU Jazz Ensemble I are Clint Ashlock (trumpet), Arthur White (saxophone), and James Miley (piano). All three of these artists are outstanding educators, performers, and composers!
We make it a priority to invite some of the best artists and adjudicators from around the country to our festival. Each of our instrumental artists will present clinics in their area of expertise and perform with SDSU Jazz Ensemble I during the evening concert on April 7th.
Each participating group will have 45 minutes for set-up, performance, and clinics. Each group's clinic will take place on stage immediately following your performance (no tapes necessary!), and of course, will be carried out in a positive, motivating manner. As part of the entry fee each group will receive an archival recording of their performance. Two outstanding ensembles will be selected by the clinicians to perform on the evening concert. Outstanding soloist and section awards will also be presented at the end of the day.
All participating instrumental ensembles will receive complimentary tickets to the evening concert on April 7th as part of the group fee, so plan to stay for the concert! For inquiries or additional information, please call the SDSU Department of Music at (605)688-5187.
