Obtaining Grades for SDSU Students

For researchers collecting data on their own teaching techniques, it is often difficult to separate your role as instructor from your role as investigator. This conflict of interest can produce unique problems such as maintaining confidentiality or may produce unintended coercion with respect to student participation.

If you do not need personal identification of individual participants, it is possible to obtain grades from Admissions after the completion of the semester. This Request for Student Information Form can be submitted online. There will be a charge for the service (see the bottom of the form). For additional information on this service, contact Joanne Skyberg.  If this method for obtaining grades is used, there is no need to obtain consent from students during the semester since no names or identification will be obtained.

The instructor/researcher should assure confidentiality in any presentation of the findings. Identifying a small SDSU class by semester and department may be enough information to identify the individual participants.

Use of the Request for Student Information Form is not a substitute for submission of an IRB proposal.
