Extension and Outreach
To successfully apply an economic concept to a problem or issue requires a thorough understanding and knowledge of that concept. To provide this knowledge to the people of South Dakota our faculty and staff engage the community through one-on-one interaction, presentations, media contacts, and publications. A majority of our agricultural work is shared through SDSU Extension and iGrow.org. Our Extension Specialists have extensive experience with programming on land economics, farm and ranch management, commodity marketing, agricultural finance and entrepreneurship.
Our Extension Field Specialists are strategically located throughout the state. They bring emerging economic needs to the department’s attention, thus enabling us to respond to critical concerns of South Dakotans. The Field Specialists work with State Specialists and other faculty to share the latest research from our department and the region with clientele.
Programs in 2012 focused on marketing commodities prior to harvest and on developing the next generation of farm and ranch managers. Programs for 2013 include managing key input costs, developing marketing benchmarks, and enhancing farm transition plans. For current content on these and other topics see the spreadsheets and publications here and on iGrow.
