Assistant Dairy Farm Manager

The Dairy Science Department at South Dakota State University is inviting applications for Assistant Manager of its Dairy Research and Training Facility.  The selected candidate will be responsible for supervision, training and scheduling of employees at the dairy farm with primary emphasis on herd health and research.  


The Assistant Manager will be expected to maintain the health and well being of all dairy livestock coordinate and supervise all research projects including maintaining research equipment and livestock, supervise all employees, and be responsible for training and scheduling of employees at the Dairy Research and Training Facility.  Specific duties include but are not limited to: supervising the farm when the farm manager is away from the unit, teaching and training all employees and students, scheduling work hours for all employees, diagnosing and treating all animals at the dairy farm, and supervising milking shifts and milk sampling.  This position may also conduct student evaluations in conjunction with the farm manager.    


An earned B.S. in Dairy Production/Animal Science and experience in working with dairy cattle are required as is one year experience on a dairy farm and herd health.  Effective verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills and interest in the Dairy Research and Training Facility are essential.  Knowledge of the dairy industry, ability to effectively communicate and interest in training students on hands-on activities at the facility are essential. 


Familiarity with dairy records systems. Experience with livestock research.   


SDSU is a land grant institution and the state's largest institution of higher education with an enrollment of 12,816 students. The Dairy Science Department includes undergraduate and graduate programs in dairy production and manufacturing with 11 full-time faculty members and 85 undergraduate students. Facilities in the Dairy Science Department include the Dairy Research and Training Facility with capacity for 140 head of lactating cows in a modern free-stall barn and parallel parlor as well as a new dairy processing plant under construction. SDSU is located in Brookings, South Dakota, a community of approximately 18,800 near the east central border of South Dakota on Interstate 29 and central to a growing dairy industry in South Dakota. The city has an excellent K-12 education system, is accessible to major medical facilities, has an active cultural and social environment, and has numerous lakes and parks within driving distance. It is 50 miles north of Sioux Falls, a city of close to 150,000.
