Dad's Weekend 

Save the date for Dad’s Weekend September 25-26, 2015. This weekend includes a number of SDSU and Brookings events and activities plus tickets to the Jacks football game vs. Robert Morris (PA) on Saturday. Check back frequently for updates and additions to the schedule!

September 25 

5:30 –7:30p.m. Reception/Registration,  McCrory Gardens Education and Visitor Center

Please stop by to pick up your tickets and information for the weekend. Appetizers, beverages and a cash bar will be available. You won't leave hungry!

7:30 p.m. Guitars on Fire, Woodbine Productions, Performing Arts Center

As a teenager Alex Fox received a scholarship to train with the director of a Symphony Orchestra in Buenos Aires. It was there where he learned to conduct and write his own compositions and began to earn a living teaching music lessons and playing in his own band. Alex has played for many Heads of State and Presidents and has toured the world.  

September 26 

7:00a.m Edgebrook Golf Course Opens, 1415 22nd Ave. South

Edgebrook offers 18 holes of fun for dad and student! Get one last game of golf in before the season ends. The crisp fall morning will be the perfect start to a day with Dad. 8:00 a.m. Open Gym, Wellness Center  

Dads work out free! Show your Dad's Weekend name tag at the front desk and enjoy free access to the SDSU Wellness Center. The Wellness Center houses state of the art fitness equipment and a variety of recreational activities. The Wellness Center is open until 8p.m.  

8:30 - 10:00 a.m. Registration, Union Main Street

If you were unable to attend the Registration Friday night, stop by the Union to pick up your tickets and information for the day. 

8:30 –10:00 a.m. Breakfast, Animal Science Building

Breakfast is sponsored by the Department of Animal Science and the Livestock Judging Team!

8:30 –10:00 a.m.  Dad's Weekend Car Show,  Animal Science Parking Lot 112

Enjoy the first annual Dad's Weekend Faculty and Staff Car Show! The show will take place in parking lot #112 directly south of the Animal Science Building. From factory originals to restored hot-rods, these four, or two, wheeled vehicles are sure to impress!

9:00-11:00 a.m. Athletics Indoor Tours, Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Complex 

This tour opportunity is exclusive to Dad's Weekend attendees! This new indoor facility will house two important components for the Athletic Department;a Human Performance Facility and Indoor Practice Facility.The Human Performance Facility has a medical clinic space, Hydrotherapy/Rehabilitation, Training Room, Weight Room Expansion and Academic Advising.The Indoor Facility has a 300 meter track (8 lanes) with 100 meter straight-a-way, Area for Field Events including Long Jump and Pole Vault, 80-yard synthetic field, 500 to 1,000 Seats and Year round training for all sports.  There will be public tours for the general public from 2:30-4:30p.m. 

9:00a.m -5:00p.m. Larson Nature Center Opens,  1705 32nd Street South

Let your adventure run wild at the Dakota Nature Park! What once collected the city's trash has been transformed into one its greatest treasures! Occupying 125 acres, the Dakota Nature Park has something for everyone: kayaking, fishing, canoeing, bird watching and more. Rental equipment is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. 9:00 a.m. Outdoor Adventure Center Opens

The OAC is a 29,530 square-foot facility that houses an Olympic-length archery range and a 12 lane shooting gallery. For Dad's Weekend, the OAC will offer archer instruction and shooting as well as access to our firearms range. Participants do not need previous experience or their own equipment for archery. If you choose to bring your own equipment it MUST BE CASED. If you choose to shoot in the firearms range you must bring your own gun and ammunition. The OAC does not have guns or ammo on the facility. GUNS MUST BE CASED.For more information about the firearms range please visit oacofsd.org.$20+tax per pair for Archery, $25+tax per pair for firearms. Archery will be available in hour blocks, firearms range will be available for 45min blocks, and both include times for safety instructions and registration. 

9:00 a.m. McCrory Gardens Opens 

McCrory Gardens is a botanical garden and arboretum operated and maintained by South Dakota State University. There are over 25 acres of formal display gardens and 45 acres of arboretum. The gardens are funded primarily by donations, admissions, special gifts and endowments. The goal is to display, educate and develop new varieties. On September 26 during the garden's Sendoff of Summer event, admission will be $1, students are always free!  

10:00 a.m. Agriculture Heritage Museum Opens

The Museum is dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of objects that relate to South Dakota's agricultural history and rural heritage. The museum explores the diverse and fascinating history, culture and science of agriculture in South Dakota.The Farm Power Gallery features a fully restored 1915 Case Steam traction engine.The South Dakota Made Gallery features products, patents, and dreams made in South Dakota prior to 1930.It features the only three remaining tractors made in South Dakota, a 1913Dakota, 1914and 1915 Farm Horse tractors.1904Overby Corn Harvester and Husker invented, patented and built in Mellette, SD.Our Life on the Land gallery features an original Dakota Territory claim shanty and a 1915 farm wife's dream house.Our current exhibit, "Through Leland Sudlow's Lens: 40 Years of South Dakota Extension Service History" takes a visual look at the South Dakota Extension Service program thru the photography of Extension Photographer Lee Sudlow.Our museum store, is a great place to find something special for your wife, mom or yourself. We will be offering a 20% discount to those attending Dad's weekend.

10:00 a.m. South Dakota Art Museum Opens

Since 1970, the South Dakota Art Museum in Brookings has been a place for people around the world to enjoy the artistic legacy of South Dakota in all its diversity. Rotating exhibits feature Harvey Dunn, Native American art, Marghab Linens and Paul Goble;as well as exhibits curated from regional, national and international artists. Stop by and visit Gregory Eclide's exhibit Unframing Lands View. He combines the traditional painting techniques with assemblages of organic and man-made debris.

Noon –3:00p.m. Wooden Legs Brewery tour  309 5th Street, Brookings

Tours every 30 minutes. The Wooden Legs Brewing Company name is a tongue in cheek tip-of-the-hat to Judge Wilmot Wood Brookings. Judge Brookings was a significant figure in early South Dakota history and the county and city were named after him although he only visited the city twice. His commitment to service and his determination to fulfill the goals he set for himself even after the loss of both legs is something anyone can admire and something we strive to emulate.  

1:00 –2:00p.m. Campanile Climb, Campanile

Sponsored by the Alumni Association, it's just a 'few' steps to the top, but worth it.The Alumni Association will even have a cold cup of SDSU ice cream waiting for you!  

1:00 –3:00p.m. Dairy Bar Tour, Davis Dairy Plant

Tours every 30 minutes. Sign up at the Friday night registration. The SDSU Davis Dairy Plant is located adjacent to the Alfred Dairy Science Hall building on the SDSU campus.  It processes approximately 18,000 pounds of milk a week. Dairy products manufactured include cheese, butter, beverage milk, and more than 60 flavors of ice cream and sherbet.  

1:00-4:00p.m. Climbing Wall, Wellness Center

The Wellness Center Climbing Wall provides challenges and fun for beginning and experienced climbers alike! The pinnacle measures 35 feet. There is a 25 foot fall and 12 foot bouldering area. Come try all the climbing areas and let your wild-side free! 

2:30p.m. - 4:30p.m. Dad's Weekend Tailgate Tent,  Lawn of Wellness Center

What's football without some tailgating!?Please feel free to park by the Performing Arts Center and stop by the Dad's Weekend tailgating tent on the lawn north of the Wellness Center. All your tailgating favorites will be available!  Visits from the Pride of the Dakotas Marching Band, Jack and the Spirit Squads will energize the afternoon while you have a chance to mingle with other Jacks fans and Athletics Staff.

5:00p.m. Football Game, Coughlin-Alumni Stadium

The SDSU Jackrabbits will take on Robert Morris. All Dad's Weekend tickets will be in Sections U &W.Please note that these sections will have GENERAL ADMISSION seating, even though your tickets have a row and seat number.This allows seating for the SDSU students! Dad of the Year will be awarded during a media time-out in the first half. You won't want to miss the pregame performance by the Pride of the Dakotas!
