Master's in Human Sciences - Family & Consumer Sciences Education

If you have a passion for equipping middle and high school students with practical skills in the consumer sciences, SDState Online’s Master’s in Family & Consumer Sciences Education can provide you with the information, techniques and personal experience needed to gain teaching licensure. Taught entirely online, this degree offers flexible course options and may especially appeal to graduates with a bachelor’s degree in nutrition, human development or another area of family and consumer sciences. It is also useful for current family and consumer sciences teachers (grades 7-12), extension educators, 4-H professionals, curriculum specialists, service unit educators as well as human resources professionals in government, business or industry.

The program will offer the pedagogy courses needed for certification/licensure. Depending on your bachelor's degree, there will most likely be several content courses that will need to be taken as well to meet licensing requirements and prepare for the certification exam in your state.

Professional licensure.

For SD Licensure you must complete the FCSE endorsement of 20 credits*, pass the PRAXIS exams and complete the Indians of North America requirement.  

*24:15:06:42. 7-12 family and consumer science education endorsement program. A 7-12 family and consumer science education endorsement program requires the passage of the designated state test and 20 semester hours of coursework, which include: six semester hours in nutrition and wellness, six semester hours in consumer and resource management, three semester hours in human development, three semester hours in family studies, and two semester hours of career and technical education preparation.  

Requirements for licensure vary by state. Assistance will be provided to candidates in contacting the licensing authority in their home states and understanding the requirements for licensure prior to completion of the South Dakota State University program.
