Located in the heart of a small Midwestern town, SDSU prides itself on being friendly, welcoming—and most importantly—safe. (Parents insert sigh of relief here.)
Let’s be honest: moving away from home is scary—especially if you’re doing it for the first time. So we make it priority to make SDSU a safe, comfortable campus community—and it definitely is! This is due in large part to the people and resources right here that are dedicated to keeping SDSU safe and secure.
University Police Department (UPD)
That’s right; we’ve got our very own police force on campus. UPD is responsible for enforcing campus policies and regulations in order to uphold the safety and security of campus. Located in the Sorenson Center on the corner of Harvey Dunn and Medary, UPD provides 24 hour access to the SDSU community.
Our UPD officers are continuously patrolling campus in cars, on bikes and on foot. They act as first responders in emergency situations; provide escort services to and from on-campus offices, residences and vehicles; and supply security at athletic and other special events on campus. Yep, they’re pretty much there when you need them (and even when you don’t).
Campus Alerts
Newly implemented, the campus alert system was designed not only to prevent campus emergencies but also as a quick and effective way to notify students, faculty and staff about campus emergencies via telephone calls, text messages and emails.
Emergency Call Boxes
Scattered across campus are 15 emergency call boxes. Yet another security feature on campus, when a call box is activated, UPD responds immediately.
Safety in the residence halls
While the safety of our students is our number one priority, the security of their belongings is right up there, too. And since students spend a lot of time in their rooms, we’ve implemented policies to ensure that our security extends to each and every residence hall.
Each hall is equipped with security doors, which are kept locked during certain hours of the day (11 p.m. to 9 a.m.), and fire alarms with heat sensors. Each student will be given a key that lets them in their hall’s security door as well as into their individual room.
