Maintaining excellence year after year

For nearly a century, the College of Arts and Sciences has offered a top-notch education to its undergraduate and graduate students. In doing so, it continually fulfills two main functions for the University.

First, the College of Arts and Sciences provides the instruction for the majority of South Dakota State’s liberal-education requirements. A liberal education gives students the means to test ideas, beliefs, and facts. It exposes them to a variety of academic disciplines that broaden and deepen their perspectives and enables them to continue the learning process as educated citizens.

Second, the College of Arts and Sciences prepares students for the various careers it represents. To accomplish this, there are more than 130 dedicated faculty members within the College. Many of them are nationally recognized within their fields of study and committed to preparing students for outstanding careers. They teach courses that develop critical thinking skills and increase global awareness, ensuring our students’ competitiveness in today’s society.

In the past decade, the College of Arts and Sciences has experienced unprecedented growth, creating an ever-increasing number of opportunities for students to study abroad, conduct research, and participate in service-learning opportunities. Such recent gains crown the already proud tradition of Arts and Sciences and help assure that its impressive history continues.
