About the Aerospace Studies Department

Welcome to the home of the Flying Jacks - Air Force ROTC Detachment 780 at South Dakota State University. Our detachment has a long history of providing leaders for our nation’s Air Force - dating back to the first commissioned class in 1948.

The Aerospace Studies Department at SDSU is dedicated to training college students for successful careers as officers in the United States Air Force. In addition to training SDSU students, our detachment has cross-town agreements with Dakota State University (DSU), Augustana University (AU) and the University of Sioux Falls (USF).

"DET 780"

According to these agreements, students from these schools are authorized to be members of SDSU’s AFROTC detachment. Students from these cross-town schools may call our detachment (see number above) for more information about AFROTC.

  • AIR 101 and 102: Heritage and Values.
  • AIR 201 and 202: Team and Leadership Fundamentals.
  • AIR 301 and 302: Leading People and Effective Communication.
  • AIR 401 and 401: National Security, Leadership Responsibilities and Commissioning Prep.

Our detachment is located in DePuy Military Hall (1150 Campanile Avenue) at SDSU’s main campus in Brookings, South Dakota.
