Water Resources Institute

Who We Are

The South Dakota Water Resources Institute is a part of the State Water Resources Research Institute Program (SWRRIP). Please click here for access to our full site. This program, authorized by section 104 of the Water Resources Research Act of 1984, is a federal–state partnership that

  • plans, facilitates, and conducts research to aid in the resolution of State and regional water problems;
  • promotes technology transfer and the dissemination and application of research results;
  • provides for the training of scientists and engineers through their participation in research; and
  • provides for competitive grants to be awarded under the Water Resources Research Act.

The state Water Resources Research Institutes authorized by the Act are organized as the National Institutes for Water Resources (NIWR). NIWR cooperates with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in establishing total programmatic direction, reporting on the activities of the Institutes, coordinating and facilitating regional research, information, and technology transfer, and in operating the NIWR–USGS Student Internship Program.

Our Mission

The mission of SDWRI is to provide the leadership in coordinating the research and training at South Dakota State University and other affiliated educational institutions and agencies across the state in the broad area of water resources. It administers the funds received from the U.S. Department of Interior, as made available through the Water Resources Research Act of 1984, and from the state of South Dakota. Funds received through these sources targeted for research are directed toward solving state, regional, and national water problems.

Graduate research training, technology transfer, and information transfer are services provided through the Institute. The Water Resources Institutes are presently under the jurisdiction of the Department of Interior, USGS. The water centers are the research arm of the USGS and the link to the nation's land–grant universities.

The Water Resources Institute is supported by the Water Quality Laboratory (WQL) in the Oscar E. Olson Biochemistry Labs. This laboratory serves the needs of the people of the state by providing analytical services for determination of organic and inorganic constituents in water. The Water Resources Institute is housed on the second floor of the Agricultural Engineering Building. The WQL is located in the Animal Science Complex just east of Medary Ave on North Campus Drive in Brookings, S.D.
