What is Supplemental Instruction?
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a series of weekly review sessions for students enrolled in historically difficult courses. SI is provided for all students who want to improve their understanding of course material and improve their grades.
Attendance at sessions is voluntary. For you it’s a chance to get together with people in your class to compare notes, discuss important concepts, develop strategies for studying and test yourself before your professor does. That way, when it’s exam time, you’ll be ready. At each session you will be guided through this material by your SI leader, a competent student who has previously taken the course.
If you attend SI sessions regularly, statistics show you’ll earn a better grade, improve understanding of course content and study more efficiently.
SI is offered for the following courses:
- Biology 101, 153, 221, 325
- Chemistry 106, 108, 112, 114, 328
- Microbiology 231

What’s an SI leader?
Have you ever wished you could do something over, knowing what you know now? SI leaders are prepared to share with you what they have learned over the years about how to study. They know the course content and are excited to help guide you through it. They’ll be in class with you every day, hearing what you hear and reading what you read. What they don’t do is lecture; their job is to help you think about the lectures you hear and the books you read and then put it all together during the SI review sessions. SI can help you learn course material more effectively and more efficiently.
Are you interested in becoming an SI leader?
For a detailed description of what is involved in becoming an SI leader, see the SI leader job description. The application process is simple. Just fill out the application and distribute two recommendation forms to faculty. One of the recommendation forms should be sent to a faculty member who teaches in the subject area you are interested in leading SI. Turn in the application at the Wintrode Student Success and Opportunity Center in Wagner Hall or the TRiO student support services office in Larson Commons and have the faculty return the recommendation forms directly to the program coordinators.
